This wonderful Brazilian-origin soapstone specimen displays different shades of green. It is called plain abstract art because the shape of the carving is secondary, just a fantasy design, it focuses more on mother nature’s creation of the stone itself. The design is abstract because, in my opinion, it’s depictive enough to use one’s imagination, of course away from reality.
Soapstone is a kind of soft stone, that measures 2 on a scale of 1-10, which means it’s relatively easy to carve it with basic hand tools. I’m a traditional stone carver and still use the mallet chisel method for shaping my pieces and rasps for details. The polishing takes longer sometimes than the carving with waterproof sandpapers with various grit smoothness. The finished surface was achieved with 2000 grit. Sealed and buffed with natural nontoxic bee wax. The base stone is a black and white patterned marble that is cut to a round shape and polished on the edges and the top.
